Sleep Poem II
when you sleep
you sleep in my humming
radio ambience
this layer of atmosphere
that hovers above every skin
you sleep inside of it
that’s why you reach for me
with your eyes closed
you talk to me
without knowing if I’m awake
you face me then face away
but you keep our line
alive with a foot on my knee
you twitch because you’re tuning
into sleep channels
you make sounds like cats
watching birds behind glass
and I look at you
and I want everything for you
and I’m awake for both of us
I can see the sleep already
leaving crap in your eyes
which you’ll be slow to remove
so when I stroke your face
I know you feel it
it’s just a little darker
that’s all sleep is
it’s together with the lights out
